May Support Group , a member of the Penang Family Planning Association (FPA) is raising funds in collaboration with Community_Works (a bunch of concerned individuals). May SG supports women and families infected and affected by HIV, poor single women-headed households, and former drug-users
and their families.
Funds raised from both donations and joget dance 'tickets' sold during the evening will go towards a badly needed new support centre for their many clients, based in Prai and Butterworth as well as Puan Norhayati Daud from Kepala Batas whose three sons suffer from Hunter Syndrome.

Community_Works in collaboration with May Support Group will work
together in order to set up the centre and go on to establish training for the
clients under the + Women programme.

THE RED KEBAYA MOVIE PREMIER & FUNDRAISER

A new movie – The Red Kebaya, due to be released in November 2006 by L’AGENDA PRODUCTIONS is directed by award-winning Oliver Knott (Dealer/Bare Knuckle/Inside Out/Free Spirits) and stars Ramli Hassan, Bob Mercer, Vanida Imran, Samantha Schubert and a host of leading local film luminaries. With cinematography by rising Malaysian star Raja Muhkris (KL Menjertit/Gangster/Puteri Gunong Ledang), it s set to be a major event in the local movie scene.

The Story
Shot partly in the stunning Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion Penang, the movie tells a story about a famous but lonely photographer who was orphaned as a small child, who sets out on an expedition to photograph old houses around Malaysia. On his journey he is haunted by images and sounds that reminds him off his childhood. At one particular house on the Island of Penang, he is transported back through time to witness the shocking truth that took place in the house, over 50 years ago. Through this experience he begins to understand the tragic circumstances that led to him being orphaned.

The Events:
Chempaka Night - 26th November 2006
In the spirit of the movie, guests will be invited to a private premier party at Club Chempaka . Pelangi Ballroom at Rasa Sayang Resort will be converted into a 1959 nightclub reminiscent of those in P Ramlee’s great movies of the late 1950’s and early 60’s, complete with live music of the genre. During the evening a short preview of the movie, in the company of the creators and cast will be shown, to set the scene for the evening’s main fund raising event.
Although the movie is a fictional story, it is a reflection of a brief period of time in Malaysia when JOGET was a part of the social scene. The film is a cultural portrayal of a bygone age and one that we hope will amuse and entertain whilst at the same time, help to raise funds for a worthy cause.
Cikgu Baharoodin a leading luminary of the Arts & Culture scene here in Penang will play “host manager” of Club Chempaka for the night. He will perform part of the show he did for Asia Society New York showcasing dances of that era as a 10-piece Jazz band accompanies the antics of the “Dance Hostesses” – Joget Girls.
These “dancing girls” would be played by society ladies of Penang who have graciously come forward to help with this cause. Traditionally these ladies or “taxi girls” would sell a dance to eager patrons. On Chempaka Night, these ladies will dance to select “gentlemen callers”, not for tickets; but for cheques made in favour of the evening’s cause.

The Gala Charity Premier – Golden Screen Cinemas 27th November 2006
Golden Screen Cinemas has donated 3 halls at Gurney Plaza for this fundraiser. There will be a red carpet reception as the main stars, producers and director will be making their appearance alongside leading politicians and socialites of Penang.

Proceeds from CHEMPAKA NIGHT and GALA SCREENING will be directed to FPA Penang to set up MAY CARE Centre Seberang Perai. This Centre will start a collaborative effort between MAY Support group and +Women to initiate an “empowerment programme” for challenged positive women. Part of the proceeds will also be given the family of Cik Norhayati Daud of Kepala Batas who has 3 boys suffering from Hunter Syndrome, alongside 2 single mothers from Women’s Centre for Change who are challenged in raising families in difficult circumstances.

+WOMEN (POSITIVE WOMEN)+ Women is currently focused on disadvantaged women such as single mothers, abused wives, those from low income households or those who are challenged in raising their children. Community_Works Project (CWP) intends to tap and develop the skills of these “women partners” and help build them and also shape a positive attitude towards their situation whilst giving them higher self esteem and control over their lives. In the spirit of change, the project is called +WOMEN (POSITIVE WOMEN).

POSTIVE WOMEN aims to provide a craft and community centre for “positive women” in Seberang Prai. Working together with the MAY Support Group (Family Planning Association, Penang) , CWP will organize a series of fund-raising events as well as help administer the refurbishment of the centre and the initial setup. The centre will then be able to offer training as well as provide workshop and community space for the “positive women” to use.

May Care Centre is the initiative of FPA Penang. It is the expansion of the Me And You (MAY) charity support group service which has over 200 clients.

Live at Little Penang Street Market August 27th, an arts and craft market, dubbed Little Penang STREET MARKET, will be held at the pedestrian mall in Upper Penang Road. The market will begin in the late afternoon and last until early evening. Rozz, Norleena Salim and The Rozells are some of the entertainers who will appear live at the Little Penang Street Market. Come support the Little Penang Street Market and the performers . Showtime from 6pm onwards.












The performers: A whole day of live music & entertainment.


ROZZ is a performer that defies anything generic. Trained as a classical vocalist from the early age of 4, Rozz has since dedicated himself to the study of music and theatre. His tertiary theatrical education in USA, and career as a performance artist eventually landed him at the epicenter of the actors's domain: New York City, where he was featured in various on and off-Broadway productions. ROZZ currently performs with The Jazz Trio at BAGAN in Penang.


Norleena Salim , a comedienne, actress and singer, has been a familiar face of the Singapore entertainment scene for the last 10 years. She was famously known for her outstanding portrayal of a 40-something housewife, Rosnah, in Under One Roof at the young age of 22. Norleena won the Best Comedy Actress at the Asian Television Awards in 1998 for her role as Rosnah. She currently resides in Australia.

Little Penang STREET MARKET

Starting July 30th, an arts and craft market, dubbed Little Penang STREET MARKET, will be held on the first Sunday of every month, at the pedestrian mall in Upper Penang Road. The market will begin in the late afternoon and last until early evening.

The Little Penang STREET MARKET is the brainchild of a group of long-time Penang residents, made up of heritage experts, tour guides, entrepreneurs, and artists who identify the need for a permanent venue for emerging artists, small cultural entrepreneurs and home-based craftmakers to sell their products.

The initiative, supported by Institute for Cultural Enterprise and Lestari Heritage Network, will combine a non-profit mission with a business model, to make culture vibrant, diverse, and sustainable. The curatorial committee seeks to promote quality products made with local or natural materials, with traditional craftsmanship, or new innovative designs.

In short, the Little Penang STREET MARKET will not only be a place for artisans and traders to exhibit and sell the best Penang has to offer, also be a regular event where cultural advocates, the public, and artisans meet each other, share resources, and exchange creative ideas. Among the attractions will be live music and artisans demonstrating their skills.

The Little Penang STREET MARKET has received official endorsement of the Penang Tourism Action Council.
